Découverte d'un ex-voto particulier sur le site cultuel d'Essarois (Côte-d'Or) : un cas de polydactylie chez les Gallo-Romains ?

During geo-archaeological research on the slope where the source associated with the Essarois (Côte-d'Or) cult site is located, in the locality of La Cave, an anatomic votive offering of a human foot was discovered in the alluvial sedimentary deposits. Carved from local oolitic limestone, it is rather crude in appearance but it is possible to make out that it has the unusual number of six toes. Although it may have been a blunder or the result of negligence by the sculptor, the phenomenon may equally have been a deliberate representation of a case of polydactyly, a malformation that was known in Antiquity.

This paper is concerned with a morphological-stylistic and archaeometric study of two small pottery statues, confiscated by the Cosenza Carabinieri Unit for the Protection of Cultural Heritage and Anti-Counterfeiting (Calabria, Italy). The research aimed to establish the authenticity of the artworks and to verify a possible origin from the same workshop manufacturing, by providing indications about the textural features and raw materials used for their production. In the winter of 2001-2002, an emergency excavation uncovered another suburban sanctuary in the periphery of ancient Gela (Piazza Gorizia). During the excavations remains of a sacellum and a votive depot datable at the end of 5th century BC were found.

The study analyzes five hoards from some indigenous centers of Sicily, paying particular attention above all to the methods of deposition and the context of discovery in order to advance reflections on their function and destination. Since these are complexes found in the vicinity or within sacred places, it is however possible to further circumscribe the interpretative possibilities. The scrap metal, in fact, as a form of accumulation of wealth, can act as a votive offering, probably cut to precise weight standards, or as a reserve of value of the sanctuary or even have the function of material used by foundries close to sacred places. International audience; L’ensemble de Moyencourt constitue à l’heure actuelle l’une des plus importantes séries de rouelles en plomb connue. L’examen détaillé de ces pièces a permis de définir un module principal, centré sur 7 mm, ainsi que probablement deux autres modules, respectivement de 6 mm et 8 mm de diamètre. La série, très homogène morphologiquement, est caractérisée par la rareté des rouelles individualisées et par une datation couvrant la période romaine. Le dépouillement de la bibliographie a permis de définir près de 40 points de découvertes pour ce type de matériel, 31 étant certains ; parmi eux, 19 sites ont livré un ou des chapelets de rouelles.
